Among MDMA samples where dose could be calculated, 4% were high-dose — a level that raises the risk of hyperthermia and organ failure, particularly in outdoor summer conditions. Ketamine analogues and heroin appeared in samples attendees thought were something else.

The service was free, anonymous, and staffed by health professionals. The evaluation found that people who received results did adjust their behaviour, especially when the substance differed from what they expected. That behavioural shift is the mechanism the program relies on. But it only works when the information travels — from the testing booth outward to the people who need to act on it.

Why security teams are now in the information chain

Pill testing generates real-time intelligence about what substances are circulating at a specific event on a specific night. That intelligence has historically stayed inside the medical tent. Security staff are typically the first people to notice a patron in distress. Rather than security and medical teams operating separate observation systems, designate physical locations where staff from both functions cross paths regularly. This is not about merging roles — it is about creating structured moments for information exchange without relying on either team to initiate contact mid-shift.

"Patron is unsteady" is less useful than "patron has been sitting against the barrier for 12 minutes, skin appears flushed, not responding to verbal check-in." The trial ran across 12 festivals. The permanent program targets 15 per year, with potential expansion if uptake justifies it. At that scale, the coordination model cannot be improvised at each event. Organisers who build a documented, tested protocol now — who sits in what room during the event, what triggers a floor-wide welfare alert, how substance intelligence moves from the testing booth to the security briefing — will be ahead of both the policy curve and the liability exposure.
