Half a million people compressed into a riverbank strip, ferry services shut down by a strike, and fireworks barges positioned along a working waterway. That is not a hypothetical stress test — that was Brisbane on Saturday night.

Seven News reported that an estimated 500,000 people gathered along the Brisbane River for Riverfire 2026, part of the Brisbane Festival, with some attendees arriving in the morning to claim spots before darkness fell (7News). A strike action cut all ferry services until 4am Sunday, removing a key transit pressure valve at exactly the wrong moment.

Why this event is harder to manage than it looks

Riverfire is deceptive. It is a free, open-access event spread across an extended foreshore rather than contained inside a ticketed venue. The strike variable nobody planned for

TransportWorks industrial action is not a security threat in the traditional sense, but it is a crowd safety multiplier. When you remove a dispersal channel — in this case, the CityCat and inner-city ferry network — the remaining channels (roads, pedestrian paths, bridges) carry the overflow. Event security teams that had mapped their dispersal plan against normal ferry capacity would have needed to adapt in real time.
