How to become a security guard in Michigan

Here's exactly what Michigan requires, and the official portal to apply. Finish it and you can start getting booked on XGuard.

Guard license

Michigan has no individual guard licence — get hired by or become a licensed agency

Honest gap: Michigan has no individual guard licence to apply for directly. To work legally you either join a licensed agency as an employee, or become the licensed sole-proprietor/agency yourself.

TrainingNo state-mandated classroom hours to work as a hired guard; the sole-proprietor route requires 3+ yrs running your own security business in another state, OR 4+ yrs as a supervisory guard employee above the rank of patrolman
CostSole-proprietor route: $25,000 surety bond OR insurance ($25k property / $100k per-person / $200k per-occurrence)

  1. 1Know Michigan licenses agencies, not individualsLARA (under 1968 PA 330) licenses Private Security Guard Agencies and sole proprietors — there is no individual 'guard card' to apply for on your own.
  2. 2Get hired by a licensed agencyThe simplest path: work as an employee of an already-licensed Private Security Guard Agency or branch — no separate personal license needed.
  3. 3Or become your own licensed sole proprietorIf you qualify (3+ yrs running your own security business elsewhere, or 4+ yrs of qualifying supervisory guard experience), you can apply directly to LARA as a sole proprietor and hold your own license.
  4. 4Meet the physical-location and bond requirementsA Michigan physical location is required for a sole-proprietor/agency license (MCL 338.1058(1)), plus the $25,000 bond or equivalent insurance.
