New Mexico Security Guard Registration (Level 1/2)

- 2Complete the required in-person training8 hours minimum for Level 1 through an RLD-approved Security Guard training program, completed within 12 months of applying.
- 3Line up your employing Private Patrol OperatorNM guards must work under the direct control and supervision of a licensed Private Patrol Operator (NMSA §61-27B-2) — you register as an individual but cannot operate independently at this level.
- 4Submit the Security Guard Registration ApplicationFile via the RLD online portal (NM Plus / self-register), answer all background questions (explain any 'Yes'), pay the $50 fee, and complete fingerprinting/background check. Registration is valid 3 years.
New Mexico Level 3 Armed Security Guard Registration
Governing statute (NMSA §61-27B) sunsets 2030 — re-check before relying on long-term validity assumptions.

- 2Complete the 16-hour firearms training courseQualify on the range at a minimum 80% accuracy score.
- 3Pass the psychological evaluationA licensed psychologist must administer an MMPI-based evaluation confirming mental suitability to carry a firearm on duty.
- 4Submit the Level 3 application with firearm certificationFile through the RLD online portal with the $75 fee and required non-lethal/firearm certification documentation. Valid 3 years.
New Mexico Private Patrol Operator License (Own Security Company)
This is NM's sole-trader route: a Private Patrol Operator license lets one person legally employ/supervise themself and others as registered guards. Statute sunsets 2030 — re-check.
- 1Document qualifying experienceAt least 3 years' experience as a security guard or equivalent within the preceding 5 years, including at least 1 year in a supervisory capacity, certified by employers.
- 2Clear background requirementsNo felony convictions, offenses involving dishonesty, intentional violent acts, or illegal weapon possession; no prior ethics violations.
- 3Submit the Private Patrol Operator applicationFile with RLD including general application information (16.48.2.8 NMAC) and employer-certified experience verification, subject to independent department verification.
- 4Meet company insurance/bond requirementsMaintain the required ≥$1M general liability coverage and $10,000 bond at the company level before operating; this licenses you to register and supervise your own guards.
